2010 : A walk thru

An SMS early on 2010 said.”coming October 10, 2010 at 10 AM,10 minutes and 10 seconds, the time and date will be ”10.10.10.10.10.10″. You might have smiled at that one. So what was 2010 like? A perfect 10? On the contrary, it was perhaps a very event filled year, with many ups and downs. Take a small look on the past yr "2010".

10.FREE AT LAST
Myanmarese opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest stepping out of her lakeside house, at 54 university Avenue-a picture of dignity and courage!

09.MIRACULOUS RESCUE
An event that gripped the world was the very dramatic and textbook like rescue in Chile of 33 miners at San Jose Mine after a 69 day ordeal, one of the miner later went on to participate in the NY marathon!

08.NATURE'S FURY
Nature continued to rumble... Volcanic ash from a moody Eyjafjallajökull an ice cap in Iceland finally became a threat and world air traffic was severely disrupted. Thousands of travelers were grounded as they camped in airports waiting for the situation to improve. A Similar situation almost happened nearer home with dormant volcanoes near Indonesia threatening to do the same, but eventually calmed down. The Haiti earthquake gave a sad start to the year 2010 with a magnitude 7.0 jolt leaving thousands dead.

07.INTERNET
The Facebook bug caught up people as it officially murdered Orkut's status in India. Most of the users ended up deleting their dormant Orkut account; myself included! It was the most visited social networking site as published by google Zeitgeist. It launched its mobile posted facility in November 16 and became ever more popular.

06.WIKI
Wikileaks shook up the world with its cables and Julian Assange being arrested. The activist of the so called "freedom" hacked the Mastercard site with the "Operation: Payback" after the company stopped taking donations for that site.

05.NOBEL PRIZE
During his 4th prison term, Liu Xiaobo was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, for "his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China". He is the first Chinese citizen to be awarded a Nobel Prize of any kind while residing in China. Liu is also the first person since Ossietzky to be denied the right to have a representative collect the Nobel prize for him.

04.TELEVISION
The stepping down of Lawrence Harvey "Larry" King from the show after 25 years of hosting Larry King Live. King's last show was aired on December 16, 2010. He will continue to host special shows though :)
Waka Waka - the song of the year!

03.ON THE FIELD
The 2010 FIFA world cup was held in South Africa and won by Spain. But for India New Delhi in October 2010.In the final medal tally,Australia emerged on top with 74 gold and overall 177 medals followed by India with 38 gold and overall 101. Lots of new sporting face came up to the front. But the games marred by the corruption allegations! :(

02.SPACE

01.GOOD BYE:
There have also been those who have left us and we must remember them:
Tsutomu Yamaguchi, Japanese dual atomic bomb survivor.
Juan Antonio Samaranch, Spanish sports official.
Jyoti Basu, Indian politician.

And at last a year is gone, hope 2011 has something good in store for us...
